CASUARINA STEINER AND ARMIDALE WALDORF SCHOOLS MUSIC CAMP 2014
Our Music Camp 2014 was a roaring success – thank you to all our budding strings students from both schools – your concert was testament to all the hard work you put in during the camp and was a delight for those of us lucky enough to be in the audience. For those that weren’t here at least is a taster (sorry about the poor film quality).
Choral Performance Team ‘Worldwide Wayfarers’ Visits Casuarina this August 12/13th
Casuarina are both thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with a group of esteemed choral artists. Worldwide Wayfarers (formerly Waldorf Wayfarers) was started in 1997 by the decorated composer, choral conductor and music educator Judith Clingam AM. The initiative brought together Australian students, parents and teachers from Waldorf Steiner schools to spend a week or two each year rehearsing and then performing. In 2000 they spread their wings, visiting the UK and Europe; and in 2012 twenty singers spent a hugely successful year touring worldwide. Contacts made in 2012 have led to a superb 85-strong group of young people and adults, with a heartfelt love of singing, touring Australia. In addition to Australians, choristers hail from China, Taiwan, Japan, USA and UK. The group often incorporate other art forms, such as instrumental music, drama, dance, puppetry and visual art, to create exciting musical theatre events. The choir retains its strong roots in Steiner ethos and ideals; sharing a common belief with the Steiner principle that the singing of beautiful, sincere, heartfelt choral music is one of the most important human activities, for both singers and listeners alike. It is a joyful expression of our common humanity.
A rare musical treat for the Coffs Harbour region, the acclaimed Worldwide Wayfarers are here for a packed two-day special event on 12/13th August. Their program includes:
- Wednesday evening 2hr adult singing workshop – for adults and children aged 10 and over, to be held at Casuarina Steiner School
- Thursday classes for students:
- Morning workshops for lower and upper primary years
- 1.45pm Performance: The Singing Mermaid (Casuarina Community free event – please join us, we would love your company and support)
- Thursday evening public performance Endangered! (venue and pricing TBC). A selection of complex choral and instrumental music, followed by a music theatre piece about endangered species; art by the Wayfarers group illustrating endangered species will be on exhibit
The School Community are invited to help support this amazing opportunity for our children to work with this enthusiastic and talented group, making this special event possible, by billeting members of the company. We are looking to house 85 individuals including 55 children aged 9-18 and 30 adults. Billeting involves offering space to sleep on the nights of Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th August, as well as the following meals: Thursday breakfast and lunch (packed), and Friday breakfast and lunch (packed) to travel with. We are also looking for helpers to prepare evening meals at the school on Wednesday and Thursday. And finally, if anyone has mattresses they can offer for use we can house some choristers at the school. If you are interested in supporting this opportunity please drop into the School Office and let them know what you can offer, or call on 02 6651 2770. Dates are short so an early response would be appreciated.

At the next session on Thursday 29th May, our work together will be guided by the key phrases of our STRATEGIC INTENT “INSPIRING lifelong learning; ENABLING individual capacity; NURTURING wellbeing in self, community and the world”, and parents will join with EE team members to explore what Community means as a strategic pillar of our Embedding Excellence process, to identify how our existing structures for parent involvement can be improved and strengthened, and to bring ideas for new and innovative ways parents can contribute to the School. This session will be seeking to identify and enhance the ways that parents feel they can make a meaningful contribution to the School and support their child’s education at Casuarina.
The session will run from 3.30-5pm, and refreshments and free childcare will be available. I look forward to seeing you there! Toni

The Song 2012: Different People (Stand Together)
It’s Australia’s biggest school initiative. With support from The Australian Government, it has run since 2007 and is all about celebrating the value of music education to students’ development, whoever they are, wherever they are. It involves more than 600,000 students, teachers – and often parents – from schools all over Australia who sign up to learn, rehearse, then perform the same song, on the same day, at the same time.
