As we welcome the new school year, we take a few moments to acknowledge some of the 2018 achievements of our Casuarina alumni, many of whom are excelling in their secondary schooling across a range of subjects and activities.
Congratulations to Natasha Newman, who was dux of the Coffs Harbour Senior College with an ATAR of 99.35. Natasha was a Distinguished Achiever in Biology, Chemistry, English (Advanced), Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1 and Visual Arts.
Other Year 12 Distinguished Achievers at the Senior College were Nikita Snoek (Visual Arts and Earth) and Luana Steinbeck (Environmental Science, History Extension, and German Continuers).
In Year 11, former Casuarina students also did well. Jenna Cash received an award for Academic Excellence, Jonas Weinrabe was awarded for Academic Achievement, and Ella Burgun received the Year 11 Leadership and Teamwork Award.
The Casuarina connection also shone at Coffs Harbour High School, where Year 9 student Taylor Cassady received the 2018 Principal’s Award.
Taylor and former Casuarina student Oscar Woolford (Year 9), were selected as two of four students from Coffs High to attend the University of NSW Eddie Woo and Adam Spencer Maths Enrichment Day.
In Creative Writing, Taylor was a finalist in Jetty Flash Fiction and a member of the writing project with Kororo Public School. She is also an active member of the school string ensemble and stage band; represented at North Coast in cross country and at state level in canoeing, and was a Year 9 peer leader.
Former Casuarina students Sam Woolford (Year 8), Sebastian Thomas (Year 9), and Oscar Woolford joined Taylor in achieving excellent results in prestigious mathematics competitions during 2018; Miranda Thomas (Year 11) was chosen to attend the Rural Scholar Medical School Program hosted at UNE in Armidale; Phoebe Sloen (Year 11) was awarded for academic excellence; and Jack Sheehan excelled at athletics at state and national level.
Another former Casuarina student, Jessie Henderson (Year 10) achieved firsts in English, Science and History and was awarded for academic excellence and short story writing.
At Bellingen High School, Tarni St. John was awarded for excellence in Music and Creative Arts; and Amisha Steinbeck (Year 10) was first in her Food Technology subject.
At Orara High, Lani Cash topped her year in Science and was awarded for academic excellence.
In recognising the achievements of our Casuarina alumni, we realise not every child can be the best at everything they do. We also appreciate and congratulate students who try hard, are kind and considerate, play a positive part in the school or wider community and make a positive difference.
We’d love to hear more about our past students and how they’re going. Please get in touch if you’d like to share your story.
